This English-language bookshop has been here in Paris, just across the road from the Notre Dame since 1951 when George Whitman, an American soldier, found himself in Paris after WW2. He lived in a small hotel room and used this as a little library and bookshop, until he bought a little apartment, which is now this shop.
Today, as you can see by the fact that you can't get a clear shot for love nor money at any time of the day or night (the shop is open 7 days a week until 11pm - Whitman wanted the non-religious to have somewhere to go on a Sunday!), it's an incredibly busy institution. Inside is rammed with books from floor to ceiling of every genre, many signed by the authors who wrote them.
A fabulous place to just wander and get lost in, it's a must-see attraction in Paris, and if you buy anything there, don't forget to get it stamped with their own stamp - it actually adds value! - Lucy
Bookstore here are always busy. cozy chairs and table, coffee bar where you can also buy snacks. open on Sundays as well, but none of them with that name of course. interesting picture in B/W and description.
What an interesting place. I see people walking around talking or texting on phones just like here. Something we didn't use to see. It looks like the book story is very popular.
