Into The City

York is fortunate that much of it's city walls remain intact, though there have been many changes and adaptations over the centuries. In Victorian times, as the city outgrew it's walls, there were plans to demolish them, but fortunately that did not happen.

However, there were a number of new arches created in the walls to allow the easier passage of people and traffic.

Here, beside the main northern road entrance to the city (Bootham Bar), an arch was created to allow pedestrians to pass safely through the walls.

Through the arch can be seen the Lamb and Lion Inn, "where all that's special about the historical city of York can be celebrated under one roof" according to it's website. It's beer garden at the rear includes excellent views of the Minster.

This is rather nice Ian: if I passed through this arch I would find it impossible not to make a sharp left-turn into the Lamb and Lion... it looks to be just the kind of pub I like!

I really like this composition, with the arch framing the inn. Think I may have been there once.

@vignouse

Thank you Richard - you would be rather spoilt for choice of pubs in this part of town - there are four between where I'm stood, and York Minster 200 yds ahead, and two more immediately behind me.

Thank you Lynne - I've had my eye on this view for a while, but it's normally crowded with pedestrians, so I've had to be patient to get a clear shot.
