This lovely carving is over the main entrance of the current town hall in Sheffield. The building was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1897 during her Diamond Jubilee Tour.
The Neo-Gothic style of the building was much criticised at the time for being over ornate. However it has some fine friezes, statues and this lovely seahorse.
@dolphin@rob24@ceilidh Thank you. I was intrigued as to why a seahorse but I can't find out anything about this carving, just other carving on the town hall. I thought it attractive. Katharine
@seattlite@tonydebont Thank you. I keep finding some lovely things in Sheffield to photo. I suppose I am only just appreciating the city I lived in as a youngster. Katharine
