Seahorse, Sheffield Town Hall by fishers

Seahorse, Sheffield Town Hall

This lovely carving is over the main entrance of the current town hall in Sheffield. The building was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1897 during her Diamond Jubilee Tour.

The Neo-Gothic style of the building was much criticised at the time for being over ornate. However it has some fine friezes, statues and this lovely seahorse.

An unusual ornament to have on a building well away from the sea, but it's very attractive.
