Viking Craft by fishers

Viking Craft

Vikings were skilled craftsmen as well as fearsome fighters. Various crafts are on display this week as part of the Jorvik Festival.

The wood carver above was busy turning stool legs using a foot operated devise to keep the wood turning while he used a chisel. I suppose the technique has not changed that much, only the power source!

It would be so much fun to attend a festival such as this and see how things were made without the modern technology we now take for granted. This is a great candid shot.

@juliac @ivan @dolphin @busylady @lhart @ceilidh @pyrrhula @essiesue @vanya @bkbinthecity @bruni Thank you. As any of you are aware I love this sort of event. The mechanism was very effective and he got up a fair turn of speed, although at one point it all stopped as the string broke and he complained that the foot treadle often hit his knee when going fast. @padlock @seattlite @denisefuller @thresheg @boomer @kt8ird Thank you. I love the variety of visitors we get here doing re-enactments of York's past. We are also fortunate enough to have come across other groups on our travels around the UK. Katharine
