Redcar Steelworks by fishers

Redcar Steelworks

In complete contrast to the shot of the lovely Italian Gardens in Saltburn that Katharine posted, this shot looks west north west along the coast to the disused steelworks at Redcar, which were closed in 2015.

Much of the prosperity of the region was based in the iron and steel industries, and it is sad to see the decline of such major manufacturing plants.

I have to confess a personal attachment to the steel industry. My dad worked in a rolling mill in South Yorkshire for around 30 years, and my mum worked in the same mill during World War 2. Without the steel industry it is unlikely that my parents would have met and married, so you could say that my existence is a byproduct of the steel industry!

Good shot of this industrial scene and interesting commentary to go alongside it.

The steel works shrouded in mist with the gritty town in front of it is iconic of a part of England's industrial heritage - this is a Fav for mr Ian.

Love the faded appearance, just like the industry you describe. All manner of manufacturing enterprises in Australia have closed or are in the process of closing. We've been reduced to a huge quarry as we dig up and export minerals and coal. Certainly not a bright future.

Not only have we lost a lot of industry in the UK, but much mineral extraction has also declined, since a lot of quarrying was carried out in national parks or other environmentally sensitive areas. As you say, not a bright future.
