Saltaire United Reformed Church by fishers

Saltaire United Reformed Church

Titus Salt was a deeply religious man who believed that his talents and wealth were given to him by God. He firmly believed that, without His help, the Mill and Saltaire would not exist. The adopted family motto is ‘quid non deo juvante’ (everything is possible with God’s help). Consequently, he had the Congregational Church built directly opposite the main offices of the mill complex, creating a direct link between his secular and non-secular activities.

The church was built between 1856 and 1859, and cost Titus Salt £16,000. It is Italianate in style, and provides seating for 600 people. The building is now Grade 1 listed (the highest rank), and is a beautiful building to look round. This is the first time I've ever managed to get into it. It is now open for 2 hours every afternoon and is well worth a look round.

Looks more like a government building or a library than a church!

Thank you all for your comments and favs, which got this shot onto the popular page!

I hope that you have enjoyed this brief look at Saltaire - I certainly enjoyed my visit there, and I'm sure I will be there again before too long.

By the way, I mentioned in the notes with my first shot of Saltaire that Titus Salt had provided all the facilities that he thought his workers needed, but that there wasn't a public house. That remained the case until quite recently, when one opened close to the mill, with the rather amusing name of 'Don't Tell Titus'
