Kirkby Stephen lies in the upper Eden Valley and has a railway station on the famous Settle and Carlisle Railway (although the station is over a mile from the centre of the town!). Thanks to an excellent promotion with various local newspapers and Northern Rail, Katharine and I were able to enjot a trip to this interesting town - a place that neither Katharine or I had explored before.
The railway station building is typical of those found along the route. It was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders.
The station is leased by the Settle and Carlisle Railway Trust (an organisation devoted to developing facilities along the line), which comprehensively restored it in 2009. It now includes holiday accomodation as well as facilities for rail travellers.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the popular page.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but I've been away a few days looking after my mum following her latest visit to the hospital.
