So this is what I really went to get a shot of when I found the wedding buses. There has been an increase in steam hauled rail services through York this summer, so when I've been free, I have tried to get shots of as many as I can. I should add that I haven't been too successful so far at catching the steam services due to other commitments, but in many respects that adds to the pleasure of seeing those that I have managed to shoot.
This locomotive was built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) at Crewe in March 1936 and named Leander after HMS Leander, which in turn was named after the Greek hero Leander. I clearly remember seeing other locomotives of this type at work in South Yorkshire during the 1960s, before British Railways finished using steam locomotives.
On this occasion, Leander was pulling a charter service from Liverpool to Sheffield, York and Scarborough, and here waits for the green signal to clear its route towards Scarborough. It had arrived in York 10 minutes early, and left again exactly on time.
Well, I'm quite overwhelmed at the many comments and favs for this shot - thank you all for taking the time to comment and fav!
Another steam train was in York today, hence why I am posting a bit later than usual, and 'Flying Scotsman' is due to pass through on Sunday, so more opportunity for steam train shots then!
