25 Years Ago....

I've been looking at some old transparency photos, and I decided that it was time that some more of them were scanned. I got out the film scanner and began to try and set it up. Sadly, no driver available to use it with Windows 10....or Windows 8....or Windows 7...., so I've had to resurrect an old laptop with a dodgy screen that runs Windows Vista. Quite a bit of time was spent getting the setup to work, but eventually scanning began.

This is one of the photos that I scanned. The original transparency was taken in August 1991 in Douglas, capital of the Isle of Man, on one of our frequent family holidays there.

This viewpoint is from Derby Castle, at the north end of the promenade, looking along the shore towards the hotels which line the central and southern end of the promenade.

We all have very fond memories of holidays on the Isle of Man, with it's friendly people, slower pace of life, vintage transport network and fascinating heritage. Perhaps one day we will be able to go there again........

This is lovely and so good to have the holiday memories to make it extra special.

We-ll, I never! When I saw this shot, I knew immediately where it was before I read its torturous journey to these pages. My parents, my elder brother and I moved to Ramsey, Isle of Man from Sheffield in 1950. I was 8 months old. My younger brother still lives there and I'm not long back from visiting him.

Ah yes! A gentler pace of life, wonderful scenery a geographic microcosm of the all UK in 221 sq miles/ 572 sq km. Whilst it has changed for better or worse, it's physical beauty remains undiminished. I miss it hugely.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated!

It has been an interesting experience beginning the process of scannin some of my transparencies. There is a lot to learn, but I'm encouraged by your positive comments.

@s4sayer

Thank you for your comment and fav - I thought you might like this one! We were regular visitors to the Isle of Man from 1979 to 2010, and have had some wonderful holidays there, and it's facinating to look back on the pre digital photos of the Island. There are many photos of our walks, either as a family, or on long solitary days out doing the coastal path and many other routes. I do feel a special affinity with the place and long to go back, but at the moment I'm not sure if or when that might be.

Lovely shot. I grew up in one the hotels about middle of the shot. The Dominion hotel.
And Summerland was my hang out right up till my late teens. From this angle it looks like nothing has changed. Oh how I wish that were true 😀

@arkanoid

Thank you. Much remains the same, but there are many changes too - Sumerland has been demolished, and many of the seafront hotels have been replaced by apartment blocks. The main thing is that the Manx welcome remains the same. We haven't ben there since 2010, but we may get there again soon.

I live in the West of the Island now. A lot has changed here over the years. Good to hear you still get a warm welcome. There's no better place when the sun is shining 😊
