Although much of St Mary’s Abbey has been destroyed (and some of the stone used in other buildings), there are remains from the abbey on display in the Yorkshire Museum. Indeed, part of the museum is built over the site of the abbey church, and the foundations of that part of the church can be seen in the museum.
This shot shows three sculptures from the abbey church that are now on display in the Yorkshire Museum. The central one is thought to be Moses, but the identities of the other two are not known.
Many other carved stones are on display, while some of the less decorative stones have been used in the Museum Gardens to create a rockery.
Beautiful works of art and well presented in your collage, Ian. On Facebook I have today posted some similar sculptures which I saw at the museum of the Milan Cathedral.
Thank you all for your lovely comments, it's lovely to hear from you.
The detail in these sculptures is impressive, and must have taken many hours. Beside York Minster there is an open sided workshop used by the Minster masons (during warmer weather) to create new sculptures to replace some of the badly eroded ones on the Minster. It is fascinating to watch them at work.
Give Katharine a big thanks from me for her so nice comment. .
