Every Railway Station Should Have One!

This replica aircraft is one of the first things to greet passengers arriving at Hull Railway Station. It is part of the Hull City of Culture 2017 celebrations, and it certainly drew attention.

It is a replica of the deHavilland DH.60 Gipsy Moth (G-AAAH) flown by Amy Johnson on her solo flight to Australia in 1930.

Amy set off from Croydon on May 5th 1930, and landed in Darwin on May 24th, a total flight distance of 11,000 miles. She was the first woman to fly solo to Australia, and came home to the UK to a hero's welcome, which culminated in her being awarded a C.B.E.

The replica was built by inmates and staff from Hull Prison.

Really cool to read the history -- and the image is well framed.

Great shot! We have a friend who comes from Hull and he's very proud of his heritage. We'll have to try and get up there to see it.

Good shot, like the idea of an aeroplane in a railway station.

I thought they are competitors. No night sleeping trains any more in Europ. Great shot of this nice plane.

In case First TransPennine Express breaks down?

Seems like a strange place to display a replica aircraft, but can see that is the best place to gain attention and a space large enough to house it. Not so strange really. Love the capture and your regular detailed commentary.

These airplanes must have been magnificent to watch flying in their times. The prisoners did a great job to build this one. Great capture and story.

Love the Gipsy Moth - great plane! I always enjoy aviation museums. What a great treat to have a plane at the railway station.

Thank you all for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated!

Not sure why the railway station was chosen to show this, except that it does have a nice high roof space to display it - but perhaps it's there as an alternative means of transport if a threatened strike by Northern Rail train crews goes ahead!
