Not a great place for a picnic by fishers

Not a great place for a picnic

The flooding in York began to subside on Friday, but heavy rain all day yesterday, both in York and in the catchment area upstream brought higher levels today. This is the area in front of the 'Kings Arms' (see yesterday's post), and some of the tables are now completely covered.

Flods of this height aren't too unusual, and much of the city has substantial flood defences, although there were serious problems in December 2015 with the failure of a flood gate. Work has already taken place to upgrade the flood gate, and many other defences are to be raised in height.

Despite a dry and mainly sunny day today, the flood water was still rising when I left the city centre earlier this afternoon, and the forecast is for it to rise another 0.5 metre by tomorrow. The weather forecast remains dry, so hopefully we will soon see the end of the flooding.

Oh....that's rather dramatic and a huge challenge for those who live and work in the area.

@sarah19 @moviegal1 @dide @seattlite @pyrrhula @bkbinthecity @kjarn Thank you all for your lovely comments. Fortunately on this occasion only a very small number of properties have been affected and the flood defences worked well. Work is due to start quite soon on strengthening, extending and raising the height of the defences - that can't come soon enough!
