Three miles east of Helmsley, and just outside the North York Moors National Park is the small town of Nawton. I've passed through the village many times but have never stopped to look round, until now.
There was once a single track railway through the village which was opened in January 1874. It was never a busy railway, and the railway station was closed to regular passenger traffic in February 1953, though there were occasional special trains after that. Freight traffic continued until final closure in August 1964, and the tracks were lifted in 1965.
The station building still exists, as seen in the photo, and was used for a variety of purposes after the railway closed. Today it is in use as a private house.
@pyrrhula@kwind Thank you for your comments and favs, they are appreciated. It's surprising how many old station houses along disused railways have survived as private houses. I'm going to have to investigate more of them.
@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian. There are quite a few old railway stations used as private residences. It's nice to see use been made of these old buildings.
