Pickering is a small market town at the southern edge of the North York Moors. One of it's attractions is a preserved railway run by enthusiasts which passes through the heart of the Moors from Pickering on it's way to Grosmont in the north.
This week there has been a visiting steam locomotive on the line - 'City of Wells' a former Southern Railway locomotive and which is normally based at the East Lancashire Railway. Who could resist going to see this lovely locomotive in action?
The British and French flags and Golden Arrow headboard are what would have been carried on a well known rail service between London and Paris in the days of steam, well before the building of the channel tunnel.
In this shot, the locomotive is entering the station at the end of it's journey from Grosmont.
( I own the oldest steam engineer learning book of steam power on trains. Publist in 1895.)
