The Green School, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire

The Green School was supported by the Rev. William Hildyard in 1851, when it became known as the Green Coat School. The name was acquired from the green dresses and tippets (short capes) which had to be worn by the girl pupils.

It was built on land donated by the Reverend William Hildyard. Mary Wensor in her will gave £400 towards building costs with Elizabeth Molecey giving a trust of £200 towards it's upkeep.

In 1874 the school was enlarged to take infant boys with the girls and a later merger with a boys school in 1942 led to the building being used as an Infant School. In 1967 there were more changes and a new school was built nearby, and the building had a change of life.

The Diocese of Lincoln handed responsibility for the Green School to St Guthlac's Church on a lease and repair basis and for use by them and the people of Market Deeping for mainly educational purposes. The building is now overseen by a management committee nominated by the Parochial Church Council. In 2004 major work was carried out to the electrical system and toilets to ensure the building complied with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act and during 2016 the heating system was upgraded.

So the building is still used by children and young people, with organisations like the Scouts meeting there.

What a quaint little school and interesting history. Reminds me of the village school my sister went to in Yorkshire.

Interesting building. It looks well built and well maintained. Is an infants school like a nursery or kindergarten?

I had the same question. infant to me sounds like baby. kindergarten would be the first school children go to before they get into grade one. the building has a great history.

@kjarn @vernabeth @bruni The UK infant school age was from 5 to 7 yrs old. Junior school was next, up to 11 years old, and senior school was 11 years upwards. Now children start school in a Reception class before going into Year 1, the first full year of compulsory education, with children being admitted who are aged 5 before September 1st in any given academic year. They progress through Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 etc, rather than using the earlier divisions. I hope that helps.
