Close to Grimsby is the holiday resort of Cleethorpes, once a popular place for holidays and day trips from the industrial towns and cities of South and West Yorkshire. It is still popular, particularly with older visitors.
Cleethorpes was a small village until the coming of the railways, and the railway company not only built a large station, but also paid for a number of facilities to attract even more visitors, including the pier.
The pier was originally 1,200 feet (370 m) in length. It comprised a timber deck and pavilion (constructed in 1888), supported on iron piles. A section was, however, cut out of the pier during the Second World War to impede its use in any German invasion attempt.
Only a short section of pier and the pavillion survives today, and it has recently been transformed into a huge fish and chip restaurant, believed to be the largest in Britain.
