Although I've taken photos of the trams and tramtrains in Sheffield before, this is the first chance I've had to get both types of vehicle together. The tram is on the left and tramtrain on the right.
Sheffield's modern tram network was constructed in the early 1990s, with the first services starting in 1994. Early passenger numbers were poor, but improved considerably when operation of the network was taken over by Stagecoach. The trams are three car vehicles built by Siemens-Duewag of Düsseldorf, Germany in 1992.
More recently South Yorkshire was chosen for the first UK use of tramtrains, which can operate on both tram routes and the national rail network. This was funded by the government to test the use of tramtrains in the UK. The project was substantially over budget and several years late. The tramtrains run on the tram lines to a junction near Meadowhall where they join a freight line towards Rotherham, and then a passenger line between Rotherham and Parkgate shopping centre. Passenger numbers are higher than forecast and there are proposals to extend the route. The tramtrains were built by Vossloh of Valencia, Spain.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It was a good opportunity to get shots of the modern trams and tram trains - but what a pity I can't go back and get photos of the original pre 1960s network before it closed!
