Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford planted avenues of trees in great quantity in the open countryside around Wentworth Castle in the 1720s, and at the highest part of the land west of the house he had built a folly (a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose) with the appearance of a castle.
This shot shows the keep of the folly, looking from the south-west. It is a great play area for children, and the National Trust have provided toy shields and swords for the children.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the Popular Page.
This shot shows only part of the folly. The area to the left is encircled by a wall and smaller towers, giving the impression of a complete castle. It was a great place for children to play!
@ninaganci@vignouse@stevepam Thank you for your lovely comments. The folly was built in 1731, and was certainly a popular place to visit when I was there.
Great architecture and impressive looking. fav.
