Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, York by fishers

Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, York

Another shot from the York Resident's Festival at the weekend, and this was the second location that I visited.

This stunning timber framed building was constructed by a fraternity made up of York citizens to provide a base for charity, worship and business in the centre of the city on the banks of the River Foss. Today, as well as being a fascinating museum it is also a scheduled ancient monument and Grade 1 listed building. It is a building with over 650 years of history. This view shows the Great Hall, on the first floor of the building.

The building remains the everyday base for the 160 members of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. A Merchant Adventurer was someone who risked or ‘adventured’ his or her own money in overseas trade bringing back goods and wealth to York.

Today the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York is no longer a trading association. It holds the Hall in trust, administers charities, operates the Hall as a museum and plays an important role in the civic and business life of the City of York. The Company uses its guild hall for meetings and events and holds services in its chapel.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the Popular Page.

York is fortunate to have quite a number of impressive old timber framed building, but in many ways, not least it's scale, this is perhaps the most impressive.

@casablanca asked how Katharine is doing with her health. Well, she is feeling much better, but is still taking daily intravenous antibiotics. She administers these herself at home. She had her weekly hospital check this morning, and the blood test shows a substantial lowering of the infection level. Thank you all for your care, concern and support over the last three months.

@vignouse

Thank you Richard. It's an incredible building. The massive timber supports on the floor below this hall are impressively massive.

@jesika2

Thank you Jesika - we make a point of keeping the Residents Weekend at the end of January each year and really overdo the tourist thing! I don't know where there is a golden elephant in York - it would be fascinating to see!
