Many plants are beginning to show the effects of autumn and are beginning to look rather tired, but I did like the range of colour in the leaves and berries of this hawthorn.
Hawthorns provide food and shelter for many species of birds and mammals, and the spring flowers are important for many nectar-feeding insects. Hawthorns are also used as food plants by the larvae of a large number of butterfly and moth species. Haws (the berries) are important for wildlife in winter, particularly thrushes and waxwings; these birds eat the haws and disperse the seeds in their droppings.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I love the colours of autumn, but it does need sunshine to bring out the best in them.
