Cleveland Circles is a walking guide based on the Cleveland Way long distance footpath which forms a horseshoe circuit around the North York Moors. By creating a series of return loops the Cleveland Way becomes a collection of circular walks of around 10 miles each.
The guide book was a way of fund raising for Christian Aid, and as part of the launch, there were teams to walk each of the circular walks. So, I was with four other walkers to complete a circuit on the North Sea coast near Staithes. It was a cold day, with a strong wind, and occasional rain, sleet and snow showers, but it was thoroughly enjoyable day out.
Sadly there won't be any more walking guides from John Eckersley. He died yesterday after a long illness. The guides that he wrote were a small part of his legacy. He was a geography teacher, charity fundraiser, walker, Christian and family man, and he will be missed by many.
This photo is from my very early involvement with digital photography, taken in April 2006 with a compact camera, and looks east along the coast towards Staithes, on one of the drier parts of the walk.
Whenever I walk on the routes in John's walking guides I will remember him and his family.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The Cleveland Circles walks are an interesting and varied series of walks. I still have some to do, so the return of better weather in the spring and the restart of the Moorsbus network should make some of those walks possible.
If only this was a walk local to me - I would be out there almost all of the time!
