Pavilion Cottages are known by that name because they are located beside a cricket pavillion.
This view of them is from the grounds of the former Clifton Hospital site. The area between the wire fence and the hedge is normally occupied by two horses, though I couldn't see them on this visit.
There seems to be little information about the history of the cottages. The York 'Local List' of buildings of historical interest has the following information: "A pair of cottages combined with cricket pavilion. They were constructed as part of the Clifton Hospital facilities, providing a pavilion for the Hospital cricket team and residential accommodation for staff. Included on the Local List as a rare and unusual example of a hybrid sports facility and their interest and place in the story of the development of sports facilities and structures." They are currently rented out as holiday accomodation.
The cricket pitch behind the cottages achieved fame in 2019 when it was chosen to host a first class county cricket match between Yorkshire and Warwickshire.
A reminder that when they built hospitals back in the 19th century, they usually also included chapels, sports grounds, accommodation etc. I'm not sure they do that now!
Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.
Though described as cottages, their use as staff accomodation for Clifton Hospital necessitated a building rather larger that a typical pair of cottages.
As Peter (@peadar) comments, the range of facilities provided in the C19th built hospitals was impressive. There were indeed sport and recreation facilities here, along with this accomodation and a chapel that has featured previously in our project.
