York has been a walled city for almost 2000 years. The Romans arrived in AD71 and a military fortress was established. Much of the current walls were built in the 13th century and enclose a much larger area than the Roman walls did.
Access to the city was through a series of large well defended gates, and this shot shows the city through the arch of Monk Bar, an entrance on the north-east side of the medieval city.
The street beyond is Goodramgate. It lies within the Roman city but was later in origin. Anglo Saxon remains were found in the area, and the name is Viking in origin.
There are a number of attractive timber framed buildings along the street. The arch is no longer used by most traffic. Cyclists use the left lane, while pedestrians use the path on the right.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Hopefully there will be more photos from the city centre soon, but it was far too busy for me yesterday. Lovely warm weather and a relaxation of some of the Covid-19 rules seems to have generated some rather mad behaviour, with many people forgetting social distancing. Hopefully the cooler weather forecast for tomorrow will bring people back to their senses.
Thank you Nina - in a way, when you look through the arch you are looking back in time, with some very old buildings in view, and the arch through which I took the shot is several hundred years ild.

I hope that you manage to get here some time - in the meantime I hope that our photos of the city are a small compensation.
