Barbican, Walmgate Bar, York

A few days ago I posted a shot of the city side of this entrance to the city of York through the old city walls - http://365project.org/fishers/365/2021-04-16

I said at that time that I would post more about the city walls of York, so what better place to show next than the barbican of Walmgate Bar.

We are now outside the old city, and this is the well defended entrance to the city. Anyone entering the city would go through the large arch. This is a well defended fortification. There would have been substantial doors at the arch, and at the opposite end of the barbican a portcullis (a heavy vertically-closing gate, consisting of a latticed grille made of wood, metal, or a combination of the two, which slides down grooves inset within each jamb of the gateway).

All the other barbicans around York city walls were demolished during Victorian times, leaving this one to give an impression of how impressive all the gates into the city would have been.

Just to the left of the barbican, the Victorians did create an arch for use as a pedestrian entrance to the city, and to the right (not visible) a large arch to allow road traffic into and out of the city.

The yellow flowers beside the barbican are a mix of the dying daffodils, and dandelions.

Thank you for the lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

It is a bit of a challenge getting a clear shot of Walmgate Bar, since there is quite a collection of road signs and traffic lights around it. What a shame we haven't looked after the environment around the Bar as well as preserving the building.
