Not the most attractive routeway in York, but home to one of the hidden gems of York. At first sight it doesn't look very welcoming, with grills over some doors and windows, and alarm systems, but it is well worth a closer look.
It's name 'Coffee Yard' comes from the first Coffee House in York being located here.
It is one of the narrow walkways which form the 'Snickelways' of York. The name 'Snickelway' was coined by local author Mark W. Jones in 1983 in his book A Walk Around the Snickelways of York, and is a portmanteau of the words snicket, meaning a passageway between walls or fences, ginnel, a narrow passageway between or through buildings, and alleyway, a narrow street or lane. The book was an enormous local success and generated lots of interest in these hidden corners.
So what hidden gem can be found along here? I'll show you tomorrow.
a bit scary to walk down such quiet spots (OK here in Africa, we do not invite trouble), though it is very inviting indeed. So looking forward to what you discovered
Love to explore those alleys in cities whos have them . Great shot and interesting history tale.
( We got plenty of them in the grass. I`m not allowed to trim it now.)
Lovely. Always worth exploring these hidden gems. I have a book 'Snickleways of York which includes diagrams of the narrow streets. It was given to me as a souvenir by a work colleague.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I love these hidden corners of York. This shot was taken from Stonegate, a bustling street, and forms a useful short-cut across this part of the city. The book A Walk Around the Snickelways of York takes a tour of many of them and reveals the city in a new light.
great picture of the 'Snickelway'.
