More from the Homestead Park version of Alice in Wonderland, and today it is the Queen of Hearts.
The Queen of Hearts is one of the playing card characters Alice meets when she is finally able to enter the beautiful garden through the door in the hallway.
The Queen of Hearts rules over Wonderland and is a tyrant - violent, authoritative and dominant. She likes to play croquet with live flamingoes and hedgehogs as mallets and balls (but only when she wins, and by her own rules) and constantly orders the beheading of people when something isn’t to her liking (although these orders apparently never are actually carried out). She also has her own ideas about how trials should be conducted, and is feared by all other Wonderland inhabitants because of her lack of patience and explosive character.
Lewis Carroll wrote the following about his Queen of Hearts character: "I pictured to myself the Queen of Hearts as a sort of embodiment of ungovernable passion - a blind and aimless Fury."
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The thing that impresses me about many of these willow figures is the way that the artist has managed to convey what the character is like in the way the willow is formed. The fearsome character of the Queen of Hearts comes across quite clearly in the sculpture.
