Vanessa atalanta, the red admiral or, previously, the red admirable, is a well-characterized, medium-sized butterfly with black wings, red/orange bands, and white spots. It has a wingspan of about 2 inches (5 cm). It is widely distributed across temperate regions of North Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, and is one of the more common butterflies in British gardens.
This example can be seen on a buddleia bush (commonly known as a butterfly bush).

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Sadly there are not so many butterflies around as we move into autumn, but it was nice to find there were still some around this bush.
