Coppergate Walk, in the centre of York, has frequently been decorated with rows of umbrellas on various themes, but I think this is the first time they have produced a halloween display. (The broomsticks have been used before, for the opening of the Hole in Wand, back in May - https://365project.org/fishers/365/2021-05-20 ).
In some ways this shot represents the growing commercialisation of Halloween, and the way that it has replaced Guy Fawkes night (November 5th) as the celebration of choice in the UK. There seem to be more Halloween displays in York this year than I have ever seen before. Personally, I miss the bonfire and fireworks of Guy Fawkes night, which were so common when I was growing up.
There will be some Bonfire Night celebrations here in York, but they very much take second place to Halloween now. There are only three organised displays in and around York that I know about for this year. Quite ironic really since York was the birthplace of Guy Fawkes!
Agree, Guy Fawkes was always fun and had history behind it - not that it was important watching the fireworks
Sadly we also starting to become Americanized and more and more Halloween every year - they even starting to trick or treat.
Its a lovely scene and would be fun to walk there every time something new is displayed
Thank you Nina. I suppose the change to favour halloween was almost inevitable, since it is very much something that the shops have taken hold of as a marketing iopportunity.
Hopefully I will be able to keep you up to date with the changing displays here, although there probably won't be any over the winter. There are quite a few displays included earlier in our project.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.
It has been interesting looking around York at how Halloween has been marked this year, and it has given some interesting photo opportunities.

Thank you Vesna. I agree, Halloween isn't a great celebration, but sadly many businesses think it helps them sell things.
