Barking up the Right Tree by fishers

Barking up the Right Tree

Immediately next to the Winter Gardens in Sheffield is the Millenium Galleries, another place that Katharine visited after she had visited her dad in his care home last week.

Inside the Millennium Gallery stands a sculpture entitled 'Barking Up The Right Tree' by artist Johnny White. It was commissioned in 2001 to reflect Sheffield’s history as the epicentre of the cutlery industry and the fabulous collection of silver and metalware housed in the Gallery.

This enormous sculpture almost defies description. The tines of forks form long eyelashes on a giraffe-like head (left), whose bristly mane of knife handles leads down to the spoon-covered trunk of a surreal three-headed tree. The affectionate nickname for this sculpture is the ‘Spoon Monster’!

Whatever it is called, it is being careful about the Covid-19 risk, with a face mask on each of it's heads.

Wow, I never imagined it was so enormous! Some people are so creative - what a great use of old cutlery

Thank you for your comments and favs. While visiting dad I am taking the opportunity to re-visit places we went together both when I was a child and more recently pre pandemic. The photos help jog his memory a little.
