It was a rather grey day when I had my look around Cliffords Tower, but the York skyline is always worth a look.
This shot shows the view towards York Minster and includes several churches. The spire on the left is what was St Mary's Church, but is now an arts centre. Just left of centre is the lantern tower of All Saints Church, Pavement (one of two All Saints churches in York). In the background, towering over everything, are the towers of York Minster. At the right hand side of the minster there is scaffolding, part of a never ending process of restoration and renewal of the fabric.
In the foreground of this shot is another building with scaffolding - Fairfax House, a Georgian town house which has had a variety of uses since it's construction in the 1740s. As well as a house it has been a Gentleman's Club, a Building Society and a cinema. Today it is owned by York Civic Trust and is open as a museum.
So, even in this small segment of the panorama from Cliffords Tower, there are many centuries of history visible.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It was a shame that my look over the city from Cliffords Tower was on such a grey day. A visit on a sunny day would have given a far more colourful result.
Thank you! Funnily enough I was first involves at St Cuthberts Church on Peasholme Green. When the congregation outgrew the building the curate (David Watson) was made rector of St Michaels, beside the Minster, and the congregation moved with him. I left St Michaels when I moved to the suburbs and became involved in the local church.
@fishers Oh how interesting! Graham Cray was in charge when I attended and I was part ofbthe dance group and did some drama performances too. Small world.
@fishers One of these days when I am in York, we should meet up for a coffee and compare notes! I think we have a fair amount in common. It would be wonderful to meet you and the lovely Katharine.

I think it was 1979 or 1980 when I left. Graham Cray was there then, and David Watson was still there as rector as well.

Good idea, it would be nice to meet. Do let us know the next time that you are due to be in York and we can arrange something.
