The traditional meal for the Ukrainian celebration of Christmas is eaten on Christmas Eve, and consists of 12 courses. The meal would be part of a social gathering and the courses would be spread over several hours. The first course would begin when the first star of the evening becomes visible - with the amount of cloud and rain we had yesterday evening we would still be waiting if we followed that particular tradition!
Sadly neither Katharine or I have the stamina to eat that much food, so yesterday Katharine produced three of the courses for our evening meal, and here they are in this collage.
On the left is a traditional Ukrainian bread. Top right is holubtsi (cabbage leaves filled with rice), Bottom right is varenyky (a fresh dough filled with potato). My favourite is the varenyky.
The Ukranian bread is very inviting and I would go straight for it without even looking at what is waiting in the other plates. Beautiful collage to show this Ukranian tradition. I don't know how someone could eat twelve courses of food but it would be nice to be present and take part in such a lovely celebration.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I would like to stress that we didn't tackle all 12 courses, but just the three illustrated in this collage. I'm no longer capable of eating the vast amounts of food that I could consume in my younger days. It would now be more of an ordeal than a feast to tackle all 12!

Thank you both. I can cope with three courses, 12 would be a real struggle!
