First of all, I'm sorry for the late post, but we have just arrived home from a few days at our daughter Louise's house. Our other daughter Lucy and her family were there as well, the first time we have all been together for quite a while, and made for a great fun filled weekend!
This shot shows two arches in Selby Abbey nave, close to the central tower, and you can clearly see the effect that the passage of time has had on the structure. The arches have been stabalised in this position. Restoration of the arches to their proper half round shape would involve partial dismanting of the building, so is unlikely to happen.
The chevron designs on the arches, particularly clear on the lower arch, are clear evidence that this arch dates back to Norman times. There are several other arches of a simular age and design, and a pillar with decoration from the same period as well.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
We had a wonderful weekend at our family get-together, which had to be postponed from the New Year due to ill health. It was the first time that our youngest grandson has seen us all together. Good food, good company and lots of laughs made it a super time!
Good to hear if your family get together.

Thank you Pammy. It has remained in place like this for a very long time.

Thank you Vesna - one of the problems with very old buildings!

It is quite amazing that it has survived so many hundreds of years with just a few little bends!
