There are quite a few houses in the village of Witham on the Hill built of this lovely stone, and they give a nice rich colour to the village.
Palace Farmhouse is a Grade II listed house, dating from the 16th century and altered in the 17th century and restored and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings and has a Collyweston slate roof with raised stone coped gables with kneelers and single gable and ridge ashlar stacks with moulded cornices. It has a cross plan. The house may incorporate an earlier building of the Bishops of Lincoln, and was twice partially destroyed by fire and remodelled.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I sould have added in my notes that the oriigin of the name Palace Farmhouse comes from the fact that it was once the southern palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, conveniently situated just a day's ride from the city of Lincoln.
