365-041 - Little Coloured Houses (iPhone Urban - 1 of 14)

Urban photography can apply to any photo that is taken within a built-up area of a town or city. This is particularly true where the image focuses on architecture or the streets, and when capturing small isolated areas of that environment, it is often categorised as Urban Abstract Photography. Expanding on these thoughts, if there is an interaction between people and their environment, this can also be classed as Urban Photography although many will categorise it as Street Photography.

One of the questions often asked is whether to photograph in colour or black and white as there is an accepted thought that black and white makes much stronger photographs for Urban photography. It is probably safe to say that many will photograph in colour and then convert to black and white in post-production. Of course, like any photograph, not every photo looks good in black and white as it is dependent on the colour ranges within the photo. Red on bright green stands out in colour, but in black and white, they convert to a similar tone of grey.

For this series of 365 photos, I will be using my iPhone XS around my small town and showing a mixture of both colour and black and white, and the first photo of all the coloured houses is a good example of why converting to black and white is not always the best choice. I will also add some random Urban photos to my other album that I have taken with my DSLR over the past few months.

I hope you like them.

Good point about the tones in considering a b&w conversion Michael. This shot works well in colour, of which there is a very attractive mix.

Interesting notes and I love these multicoloured houses all in a row. I wonder if the owners discuss together and agree a pastel colour pallet or it just evolves that way.
