The Fribourg Funicular

Built in 1899. At a time when most Swiss funiculars were steam powered, this one was, and still is, powered by filtered waste water.

At the top of the hill the rail car's tank is filled with enough water to offset the total weight of the bottom car. Descent speed is controlled by brakes. At the bottom the tank is drained back into the city's waste water system.
That’s interesting. Such a simple and quite elegant method and completely green.
