@ethelperry well, there is no set technique, but it does seem like there is often this in common: lots of layers, often separating main flower from background so that different modifications happen separately, often creating an embossed version (the GIMP makes this grey) which I often use as a kind of texture layer and sometimes as a bump map. I can't say that there is anything systematic about anything ... just having fun with wild experimentation.
