Got a tale of two halves today after a morning out at St. Aidens. It’s an old pit location. In extras is one of the draglines that still stands at the top of the site. If you want to hear about the impact of open cast mining on the landscape listen to Peggy Seegar singing Draglines. Brilliant song. Anyway, do not despair… coal usage is rapidly declining for obvious reasons as it’s the highest CO2 per unit energy (well barring peat). The Yorkshire sites have been restored into the most beautiful wetlands and are now mostly run by the RSPB. See other pic for the dragline. https://365project.org/fueast/in-the-woods-an/2021-03-04
Draglines at my heart
They're tearing us apart
And the mountainside where we were born
Must I weep and mourn for the land
That took ten million years to form
Now all my eyes can see are just the bleeding scars
Across the mountainside, across the mountainside
