I'm surprised by the response I get when asking people if I can take there photo, yes is the reply, some ask what it's for and I just tell them that I'm learning photography, which is not a fib. I bought some fish of this fella on Bolton market, asked if I could take his photo and he said yes, didn't even ask why.
Haven;t had the * guts * to approach strangers yet !! good shot - natural pose --- looks as he has eaten quite a lot o'chips with his fish ( chuckle !)
Like everyone else, I'm afraid to ask and tend to sneak stuff with the long lens. Silly really, cos I'd say yes if someone asked me! I did do a project a couple of summer's ago taking my class mascot around for "adventures" to keep my students going on revision and posting them on facebook. Likewise, when I asked people to engage with my white polar bear, I only got 1 rejection and people just found it amuzing but it was easier with a back story and a cuddly bear! He had a great summer- he was a postie, he went on D of E, he sat on the wing of a jet at a flying display and all sorts of other stuff!
