Derwent Dam. by gamelee

Derwent Dam.

During the Second World War this reservoir was used by pilots of the 617 Squadron for practising the low-level flights needed for Operation Chastise, known as the Dambusters.

A unique and never to be repeated flypast took place in September 2014 with the two remaining airworthy Lancasters.

Oh I remember that view from the film - still one of our favourite WWII films! Great image.

Oh - they don't make dams like that any more - two tiny castles floating on water.

Great to see the video clip of the Lancasters! They didn't go very low. Beautiful ramparts for this dam!

I was born in the middle of WW2, father in the RAAF, was nuts about all/any aircraft. The Dambusters is seared into my mind, I have official RAF photos of some of the aircraft and aerial shots of the dams in an album.

Interesting background to the spot, and a lovely place that belies its history.

Hm… I stayed at a college called Derwent Hall in the late 80s… and though there was a lake, I don’t remember this… ;-p
