Formidable Pair

I haven't been to the local pond in a few weeks. Finally yesterday I got over there and found these two new comers. We don't usually have resident trumpeter swans at this pond although I did see one several years ago but it seemed to be just passing through. I wonder if this pair will stay?
aren't they just fab!

Terrific catch! Are they tagged for research purposes?

@aikiuser I’m not an expert but as I understand it, at the beginning of the 20th century Trumpeter swans were nearly extinct in many parts of North America. At some point a project to re-establish them in the US mid-west and in Canada was started based on eggs taken from Alaska and relocated further south. These swans are migratory birds and learn the routes, stop over points etc. From their parents so hand hatching and rearing these eggs brought up the question of how they would establish new routes and a number of tagging or banding projects were started to try to track their movements and see how they are doing. Abut five years ago I saw my first swan with a number tag on it’s wing and so did some research and found out who was tracking them and how to notify them of the sighting. I may have some details wrong but that is the general gist of it. If you are interested in more details you could check out this site: https://www.trumpeterswansociety.org/what-we-do/trumpeter-watch/overview.html

They look as formidable as a pair of geese I used to know! Nice shot.

There are a few Mute Swans with numbered bands on, but I haven’t reported them as I know others have and they seem to have only come from upto 30 miles away.
