This is going to be a long winded explanation so feel free to just skip along past it if time is short.
I got up and out before sunrise this morning, in the hopes of capturing an inspiring shot of the first sunrise, of a sparkling new year. As fate would have it, a heavy, grey, overcast sky meant that, while the sky lightened a bit, there were really no sunrise shots. So, I headed over to our local pond and decided to retake a landscape scene that I have photographed often before. I tried a few other shots too but found nothing that was very inspiring or 'welcome to the new year' feeling.
At home I uploaded the photos and found a saries of dull, grey, misty (but not in a mysterious or romantic way) shots.
In the end, I took this one, added more light, and warmed it up, in post processing, and here it is.
It's not how the pond actually looked today but maybe it's how I wished it looked.
I have a feeling that 2022 may be the year of faking it till you make it. Assuming an attitude of hope and joy that you don't really feel until maybe, hopefully, you do?
Beautiful work, Joanne! Enjoyed reading your explanation, which many of us can relate to! You still got out there early and enjoyed nature, and then had the joy of uploading your photos to see what you made!
I think that’s a beautiful image Joanne and I love your explanation, something I can identify with. I’m impressed that you got up before sunrise.
I get the feeling things are tough where you are right now. My sister in law is visiting my niece in Oakville and she says that restrictions are worse there than they are here. I hope things will improve for you very soon.
Yes, a sunny beginning of the year would have been nice. Your experience with your photo post is an apt metaphor for how we are moving along these days. But in the end, you found and created a nice photo. That says something.
I understand your frustration. I started a tradition over 10 years ago of getting up to welcome and photograph the dawn of each new year. Some years the sunrises have been spectacular but not so this year. Rain, fog, overall dreary. Still glad I got up and out though. Such a peaceful way to start the year! Wishing you the best in 2022.
I think making art out of whatever you’re handed will be the spirit of 2022 for sure! Whatever you had planned, you still got out, shot and posted. Buckle up, indeed.
