Time is passing.
Yet, for the United States of America
there will be no forgetting
September 11th.
We will remember every rescuer
who died in honor.
We will remember every family
that lives in grief.
We will remember the fire and ash
the last phone calls
the funerals of the children.
...former President George W. Bush
This was taken at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City when we visited in 2014.
We had signed up to go to the US Open tennis championship in NYC and take a New England cruise in 2001 to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary, our son's 18th birthday and his going off to college. We saw the Women's Finals Tennis the night of Sept 8 after visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island all day. My son wanted to go to the top of the World Trade Center (twin towers) but we ran out of time and needed to catch the subway to Flushing Meadows. I said "next time."
We boarded our ship on September 9, 2001 and sailed to Nova Scotia, Canada as the twin towers faded in the distance. It was there we learned about the falling of both towers on September 11...we will never forget the shock, the horror, the pain. I would like to let this day pass by but the memories come flooding back regardless. Sometimes "next time" is lost forever.
33,000 first responders to 9/11 still struggle with illness or injury 18 years later, not counting those who have died from 9/11 illnesses since the attack.
The memory of 9/11 will never ever fade from my mind. A moving story. God Bless all of the people who lost their lives on 9/11. God Bless all of the heroes who saved lives on 9/11. God Bless all of the survivors of 9/11.
I don’t think I will ever forget. I was living in Australia at the time and had stayed up late to watch a film. It was interrupted by breaking news. I stayed up all night watching the drama unfold. The sight of that 2nd plane coming in is etched on my mind for ever.
It’s one of those happenings where everyone can remember where they were and what they were doing! Even when watching on TV it didn’t seem real & took a little while before realisation dawned! I don’t think that anyone alive & watching that day will forget!
My son was being re-admitted to hospital just a few months after his premature birth that day. I remember standing holding him in a corridor watching the screens with the nurses when the second plane came in and we realised it had not been an accident. @carole_sandford is right. Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing. Peace be with anyone this memory still touches with pain.
Such moving words. (And, I shall never forget being in a hospital children's play room as my son awaited major surgery, and the television suddenly switching to the live event that seemed so horrendously unbelievable).
We were asleep in our NZ home and the phone rang around 3am! It was our son in America and he shouted down the line... there's been a tourist attack.. that's what it sounded like - then realised it was 'terrorist'! No more sleep that night!
We talked about that day at the office this morning....which departments we were in, who told us the news...everyone remembers...everyone will always remember...
I think this display was one that most touched my granddaughter when we went to NYC last winter - she was only 3 at the time but has very strong feelings about it.
Remember having the News on during that day, then turning on the TV and saw the 2nd plane fly into the towers. Horrified ...!! Was upset and called my husband, we lived in Brunei, Borneo at that time and news didn’t really bother everyone out there because it seemed so far away and not touching us...but not that time....every colleage watched the news and most of them went home to spend some time with their family. Frightening and so, so sad...
Great tribute. Like everyone, I remember this day. But I remember him differently. It struck me to what extent a person can be angry. As humans, we crossed the next gate of hell.
Your words and photo pain my heart once again. And soon another year's anniversary will pass by. I could only wish our nation felt "as one" as we did then... What's it going to take...
