The Overall Ambience by gardenfolk

The Overall Ambience

All four elements were
happening in equal measure...
the cuisine, the wine, the service and
the overall ambience.
It taught me that dining could
happen at a spiritual level.
...Charlie Trotter

We had a "splurge" lunch while on Catalina. It was at the historic former summer mansion of William Wrigley, Jr. and his wife Ada, built in 1921, that sits high on a hill overlooking the town and Avalon Bay. We did this early for our 37th wedding anniversary, which is actually today, September 12.

The only way you can see The Inn on Mount Ada, as it is called now, is by either being a hotel guest or with a lunch reservation. Lucky for us, they had a lunch reservation available. It was delicious and a fabulous experience with incredible views. I was also allowed to explore the main floor, inside and out, and take photos. I loved all the exquisite details, three different crown moldings, door casings, 16 sets of French doors, 3 glass pocket doors and all the original windows of which there were many. Upstairs was for guests only but from what I did see, I was ready to move in.

Starters:
We ordered the Dungeness Crab Cake with roasted beets, radishes, shaved fennel and poblano dressing. Also a Caesar Brussels Sprouts Salad with fresh sprout leaves, sliced radish, chopped chives, pickled red onion, pecorino cheese and caesar dressing.

Entree:
Baked Pacific Swordfish a la Creole with steamed broccoli and Potatoes Brabant.

Dessert:
Lemon Meringue Pie with bourbon vanilla ice cream and fruit.

We also each had 3 glasses of Willamette Riesling...but who's counting.

The sweet kitty cat is polydactyl and was born with more than the usual number of toes on one or more of its paws. Thus, he was affectionately named Big Foot. Big Foot was my best friend during lunch because I shared much of my swordfish with him. I am such a push over for feeding animals...one of my favorite things to do.

Great to hear the way you celebrated your wonderful anniversary. Particularly the menu - I always like to hear what's available! I presume chewing gum was not on the menu?

Happy anniversary! What a lovely celebratory lunch. Sounds and looks delicious. From his size, I would say Big Foot has enjoyed more guest’s meals besides just your’s. He’s a big boy!

@stevepam Haha! BigFoot the cat ate a good portion of my swordfish. I was his best friend for at least 30 minutes. :)

@gardenfolk I seem to have missed these! What a perfect celebration! Bigfoot does indeed know how to work the crowd...he enjoyed Seafood pasta (minus the pasta!) and my "absolutely divine" hanger steak, cooked only to rare perfection! It took a very special reason to give me in to sharing it! On one occasion I asked where he was, and was told he was in the kitchen being fed sea bass! That's a once-feral kitty that fell into a pot of jam!!! (All four feet have the extra toes!)
