While kayaking yesterday, I spotted this green heron fishing at the edge of the water. He wasn't paying much attention to me so I held my paddle still and was able to float in quite close. At the time, I wasn't able to see exactly what he had snatched up so I was a bit surprised when I checked out the images on the computer to see that it wasn't a small fish in his beak but a grasshopper. I read online that green herons do use insects as fishing lures . . . this grasshopper must have been too tasty to let go because he swallowed it right down instead of using it as a lure.
