It's hard to concentrate on posting when our friends and relatives are facing the worst cyclone in recorded history in the north of Queensland tonight. A cyclone almost as big as the United States and as strong as Katrina is bearing down on Far North Queenslanders as I write, with almost certain loss of life and certain devastation of property.
Today, in northern New South Wales, we enjoyed a hot (38 deg C) day with a stiff breeze, courtesy of the outskirts of the imminent cyclone. I spent the day first at the airconditioned cinema, where we watched the Coen Bros' True Grit, then at Nambucca Heads, where we swam in the cool waters of the Nambucca River. The nearby breakwater has a display of artwork similar to that at Port Macquarie, that I posted recently. Tourists and backpackers have left their mark in a colourful fashion. I'll make a collage of some of the more interesting ones when things settle down. In the meantime, this is where I spent much of my day.
My heart goes out to the people in Queensland too...what a tragedy to be hit by those floods and now a mammoth cyclone. Hopefully not too many lives will be lost. This is a wonderful shot Robin, I love the bright colours amidst your stunning landscape, you have shot it to perfection.
I've been watching it all on tv. What is about to happen is awful, I can't believe that the flood cleanup hasn't even really started yet and now QLD is going to get this. I know I won't be sleeping for awhile, I'm glued to the screen.
You've taken a great photo, very colourful art.
Love those colourful rocks, but I understand that your thoughts are somewere else. I hope your loved ones will be safe for this storm, and also the other people in that area.
It's just crazy ~ So much dreadful weather fallout that your beautiful country has had to deal with lately, Robin. I hope that those in the path of Yasi are heading for higher ground. My thoughts are with all those in harm's way of the monster storm.
I do like this stone decorating style, it makes a place look brighter and fun. Hope you enjoyed the film, it's on my list being a fan of the Coens'. Will it reap any prizes after all the Oscar nominations it's earned.
so scary Robin...and your waters are so calm. I hope everyone is ok and survives that insane weather. This photo is pretty amazing with the calm picturesque water and sand right next to the graffiti rocks. Love the contrast
What an absolutely beautiful photo, Robin. I love everything about it . . great composition, the blue of the water, the perfect placement of the clouds. Wow! My thoughts with the people of Queensland.
Great capture of the art and landscape. Tragic that this storm is headed for the same towns devastated 5 years ago by another cyclone. All the best to those in harms way, hope they are in a better position to face this one having been through a similar storm recently.
Beautiful break water. I will recommend this kind of paintings to some young talents here. I love the colors and the joy of it, as long as it does no harm to nature.
I can imagine you all are pre-occupied - between the floods earlier and the cyclone now - whew. Are your seasons always like this? Colorful rocks, btw.
@pfmandeville Thanks Pamela. We were warned that climate change would have these effects but a lot of people didn't take much notice. May have to do a rethink! We do have these phenomena regularly but they are much more severe this year
My prayers are with the people of Queensland. Being on this site really has made all of these things that happen so personal now.
This is a beautiful shot Robin. The art work is great and the water stunning. Wonderful place to live I'm sure.
I've been so caught up in the drama of Egypt and the middle east that this cyclone caught me off guard. Thanks for pointing me in a new direction. I love this image. First, it reminds me of the art/grafitti that covered the Berlin Wall, but also, I love how colorful the shot is. The art work on the rocks is lovely against the vivid blue water and sky scalloped with clouds gathering above the mountain. Really beautiful.
Amazing pic!
I thought immediately of you when I heard about the terrible weather. I'm glad you are not in that area, but still I hope not many people are hurt there.
I love the rock art you have posted-just beautiful. More importantly, I feel for the people in the path of the cyclone. Living in South Florida and experiencing hurricanes first hand, I really feel for the people of Queensland and for their safety.
Robin you created a very nice image. I like the contrast of the natural and manmade. The beautiful water and sand, mountain and clouds agains the brightly painted rocks is great. The shadowy mountain is fab. I am saddened to think the cyclone will do the damage of Katrina. After all of these years the communities affected are still in disrepair.
I am praying for everyone in Queesnland and hoping there are no lives lost with this storm. They have already had enough with the floods. I love this photo, the art is really amazing and the colors. Why did they have to name that storm in Louisiana Katrina? I used to love my name until I started having to share it with that devastating storm! lol
Nice colorful shot! Nice & cheerful! Such devastation but from what I've read, no loss of life. Your country has had enough disasters. Time for it to stop. Glad you are safe & away from this one. My heart goes out to your friends & relatives who may face rebuilding of their homes & lives.
Yes I am sure we all sighed with relief that Yasi has not wrought more destruction than expected. I guess the tourists there are more creative than the ones there as I have not seen rock art like that here. A very colourful capture for sure!
My heart just goes out to all of the people whose lives have been affected by the terrible weather this year. It just doesn't seem to end. As for the picture, It's a wonderful colorful picture. I think I have a love/hate feeling about the idea I love the look of natural rocks by the beach, but if the graffiti has been done in good taste and in an agreeable manner, then it can be fun. Just not sure??
Fun shot....so cheerful and colorful! Too bad so many have suffered with all the severe weather you've been having. You all deserve a break from Mother Nature, that's for sure!
Love the pic.
You've taken a great photo, very colourful art.
Thinking of everyone in QLD
This is a beautiful shot Robin. The art work is great and the water stunning. Wonderful place to live I'm sure.
I thought immediately of you when I heard about the terrible weather. I'm glad you are not in that area, but still I hope not many people are hurt there.
Great composition in this shot. The colors are wonderful not only on the rocks but in the background as well.
Big thanks to everyone for your wonderful comments and also your well wishes. Although there was widespread destruction, it seems that there's been no loss of life so far. I'm impressed with the way everybody from the government down prepared for this disaster. The rebuilding will be a major headache, I'm sure. Thanks again.
