'Pack of galahs' by girlie

'Pack of galahs'

We love our galahs, arguably the most comical cockatoo in Australia; those of us who aren't farmers, of course, trying to grow crops of grain. They fly around in huge flocks and behave absurdly and hilariously, most often during wet weather when they can be seen hanging upside down by one foot from telegraph wires, screaming raucously, loving the rain. We have a number of sayings that we apply to people who behave in an intemperate fashion. A group of unruly young men, for instance, may be described as 'a pack of galahs'. A person who behaves like an idiot or otherwise displeases you might be called 'a flaming galah'. Someone with whom you are really angry is a 'bloody galah!' These ones that I came across this morning were peaceably grazing away on the front lawn of a motel in a nearby town. When I approached a bit closer they took off, screeching their displeasure. I'll post another photo of them in flight in another album.
Love these! I once dated a man from NSW and I learned a lot about the birds. These are so pretty! Thanks for sharing!

Another new lesson for me. I have never seen galahs. Your description made me laugh! I might have to use that expression "flaming galah". LOL

my favourite Aussie bird. Unfortunately, we don't have many around here as the Sulphur Crests seem to scare them off!!!

Great capture of them

will store that little bit of information away - for some moment when I can say to someone that he's acting like a flaming galah -- love it.

I love the galahs Robin and as you say, once you see them in action, you know where all these sayings come from. We hand reared a galah once and ended up calling him Boof - because of all his antics. Aren't they a gorgeous, vivid pink. Lovely photo.

@twofunlabs Thanks Mike. Yes, I think we're all galahs to one extent or another! It can be quite an affectionate term, depending on the behaviour it relates to.
