Afternoon tea by girlie

Afternoon tea

A flock of Galahs visited yesterday afternoon to munch away on the grass seed out the front of my house. They are the most amusing of birds: noisy, gregarious show-offs that like nothing better than to swing crazily from one leg off the high wires in the middle of a thunderstorm or to perform wing-flapping acrobatics on the top of flag poles. They are from the cockatoo family and fly around in huge flocks all over the country. Devotees of the soapie Home and Away might have heard the character Alf refer to someone as a 'flaming galah', which is a term we use about anyone who is behaving like an idiot.
What beautiful birds! We only see colorful birds like this in cages in pet shops - how lucky you are!

They are beautiful birds.
Shame they are munching your grass seed. We are trying to seed the yard in back as our extreme heat and drought conditions were not very grass friendly this year.

Cute shot! I wish we had galahs to watch, although I suspect if we did, I'd never get anything done!

So beautiful Robin, I do miss the Galahs that used to wake me at 5.00 a.m. as they had their morning gathering in the Tipuana tree outside our bedroom window in Perth. My favourite bird despite their anti-social noise!

These are very colorful, nice capture and great detail...is this a type of parrot.?
September 25th, 2012
@tonyjsisti Thanks, Tony. No, they are a cockatoo, not a parrot. Related species, of course, but not the same. Cockatoos occur only in Australia and surrounding islands. There are some anatomical differences between cockatoos and parrots.

wow ~ what beautiful colours and a great shot

@cdonohoue Thanks, Cathy. It's really not a big problem to me. We have a semi-tropical climate here so the grass doesn't suffer from extremes of cold over winter and we have plenty of rain in summer. There's plenty to go around, even with the depredations of the cockatoos.

They are so pretty and it sounds as if they're even more amusing!
