Christmas prize by girlie

Christmas prize

I got the best surprise this morning when I discovered my new Red-flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia) had flowered overnight, producing several sprays of bright red flowers with more on the way. You can see a couple about to unfold. I won this tree in a weekly draw at the local plant nursery and am delighted. When it's a bit bigger, it will be full of Rainbow Lorikeets squabbling over the nectar. These trees are native to Western Australia but are popular in our gardens in the Eastern States of Australia as well; they come in many bright colours.
Wonderful that you won this beautiful tree! Congratulations! Enjoy your Christmas, are you staying home for Christmas?

@jenrobcarr Thanks, Jen. We've had family and friends visiting for the past week and more coming today but will go to a friend's place for Christmas night with all the kids and grandkids. That suits me; not so much cooking and prep. to do!

It has been so interesting to see Australian flowers, and to see how many of them have similarities to the bottle brush bush I grew up with.
Bottle brush is so unusual to look at, I wouldn't have dreamed that any other flower could resemble it. Are they from the same family?
This one is a fav.

@pasadenarose Thanks, Rose. They are both from the Myrtaceaea (or Myrtle) family, but there the resemblance ends. This red-flowering gum is endemic to a very small patch of the SW of Western Australia, whereas there are varieties of bottlebrush all over the continent. All over Australia there are many thousands of Myrtle-related flowers. I'll post another on my site very soon of the Lemon Myrtle that is flowering now and will tag you, for your interest.
