Fig Bird in Lilly Pilly Tree by girlie

Fig Bird in Lilly Pilly Tree

Our native lilly pilly trees are popping out their lovely red berries and it's time to make them into cordial, jam and jelly. However, we have to fight the fig birds for them and I caught this yesterday high up on the top branch just before he flew away. My goal is to get one with the berry in its beak but so far they've moved too fast.
Are they really called Lilly Pilly trees? Beautiful shot, Robin.

@yonnie Thanks, Yvonne. Yes, that's their common name. Their botanical name is Syzygium luehmannii. If you click on my tag 'lilly pilly' you'll see some other shots I've taken over the years of the picking and cordial-making, as well as the lilly pilly flowers.

It looks like those birds are meant to feed in those trees. Their coloring is a perfect camouflage.
Honestly, the more photos I see of Australia, the more I want to go visit.

@pasadenarose I hope you come sometime; we'll make you more than welcome. There's a lot more than I could ever hope to show.

Stunning shot and so perfect for the season with the fantastic Christmas colors! Time seems to whiz by these days...seems like it was just Lilly Pilly jam making time from your posts of last year.

@peggysirk Believe it or not, Peggy, that was two years ago! I know, it doesn't seem like it.

The name “Lilly Pilly” never fails to make me smile when I read it. A gorgeous combination of bird and tree! I wonder if I could find lilly pilly jam at an international market here in the states.

@lisjam1 You could try for it under the name Riberry or Riberries, which is the name used for marketing the berries overseas. I could send you a jar if it would get through Customs.
