Lemon sucker by girlie

Lemon sucker

This naughty creature is a Bronze Orange Bug and it's busily sucking the juice from my lemon tree. You can see its sucking mechanism extending from the head in between its two front legs. It's of the stink bug variety so I was careful not to touch it when removing it from the branch. When disturbed, the bugs orientate themselves so they can squirt an evil smelling chemical at their attackers which not only smells awful, it stains the skin and can cause a burning sensation in the eyes.

Amazing close up of this bug and so much detail. I am sure you don't love it, if it's sucking your lemon tree.

Everything about this bug shouts "keep off!" - its red feet, the heraldic symbol on its backplate, and attitude!
February 2nd, 2013
@janturnbull You're right; the pattern on its back looks like a sword, doesn't it?

Brilliant color and detail in this shot of an attack in progress. Was this offending Lemon Sucker relocated to the park? :)
February 3rd, 2013
@peggysirk Thanks, Peggy. Afraid no lemon trees in the park, so it was dropped into the green bin and will no doubt find its way to a more habitable spot.
February 3rd, 2013
Brilliant shot of it....wonder if that's where the concept of a "straw" comes from :-)
